Effie Marie Royalty, 73, widow of Alvin Royalty, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. Born June 29, 1936 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Ada Drury Maddox. She was a retired cook for Beaumont Inn having worked there for Twenty-Five Years. She was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church, enjoyed fishing, music, working crossword puzzles, and going to flea markets. |
Survivors include one son Michael Wayne Royalty of Harrodsburg; two daughters: Glenda Lou Royalty and Patricia Ann Williams both of Harrodsburg. One brother James (Mildred) Maddox of Salvisa, one sister Mary Katherine (Robert) White of Harrodsburg, five grandchildren, and special friend Paul Snow also survive. |
She was preceded in death by one sister Nancy Royalty and two grandchildren.

Harold Douglas Snapp, 71, of Burgin, died Friday, June 26, 2009 at his residence. Born February 16, 1938 in Fayette County, he was the son of the late Carl and Ethel Elliott Snapp. He was a retired farmer, a member of the Shawnee Run Baptist Church, and was an avid fan of U.K. Basketball. |
Survivors include one sister Eva Margaret O’Bannon of Burgin, two nieces: Eva Reynolds of Danville and Kathy Mitchell of Georgetown. Four great nieces, one great nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by one sister Lillian Frances Snapp. |
Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Friday, July 3, 2009 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Geoff Barrett officiating. Mr. Lafon Darland, 93, of Harrodsburg, widower of DeEtte Sims Darland, died Friday, June 19, 2009 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. Born January 19, 1916 in McClean, Ill., he was the son of the late John W. and Bertha Robinson Darland. He was a retired Television Repairman and Farmer. He was an avid Lionel Train Collector having over sixty antique engines which date back to the 1940’s. He was also a member of the Lionel Train Collectors Club and Calvary Baptist Church. |
Survivors include one son Doyle Sims (Kim) Darland of Harrodsburg, one “adopted” son Willard (Ethel) Hamm of Harrodsburg, one sister Stacy Batts of Knoxville, TN., two grandsons Timothy Doyle (Krystal) Darland and Christopher Keith Darland both of Harrodsburg, one “adopted” granddaughter Karen Hamm of Harrodsburg, and four great grandchildren Logan Darland, Taylor Darland, Hunter Dean, and Colton Darland. Several nieces and nephews also survive. |
He was preceded in death by two sons Gerald Dale Darland and J.W. Darland, one brother W.H. Darland, and one sister Ladine Sheperson.

Richard H. Schmiers, Jr., 57, died Monday, June 1, 2009 in Junction City. Born November 24, 1951 in Louisville, he was the son of the late Richard H. Schmiers, Sr., and Anna Mae Snow Rogers. Richard was a retired “Jack of All Trades” having worked at Spring Hill Cemetery, Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home, Lincoln Tool & Die, and Country Hearth Inn. |
Survivors include three daughters: Patricia (Danny) Cross of Parksville, Donna Reenee (Marcos) Schmiers-Gomez of Danville, and Eva Lee (Wayne) Reeves of Waddy. Three sisters Sharon Goode of Junction City, Barbara Hall of Middlesburg, and Evelyn Ward of Corbin.
Fourteen grandchildren, a special friend Vivian Martin, family friends: James Donald Dearing, Roy Kenneth Price, Troy Dale Claunch, and James Todd Wilson, and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

He was preceded in death by one grandson Christopher Claunch and two brothers Tom and Chuck Schmiers.

Mrs. Elizabeth L. Hayslett, 67, widow of Joseph Huston Hayslett, died Sunday, May 31, 2009 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. Born December 14, 1941 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Pagie and Lomie Claunch Lewis. She was a member of Benton Baptist Church, retired from Cricketeer, enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting, reading, cooking, and spending time with her family. |
Survivors include one son Lt. Col. Joseph H. Hayslett, Jr. and his wife Jennifer of Guam and one daughter Elizabeth Jean Fogakoldyke of Indiana.
Four sisters: Opal French of Mercer County, Linda Watts of Mercer County, Florence Bee Devine of Mercer County, and Barbara Hodge of Boyle County. Four brothers Charles Lewis, Buford Lewis, Tony Lewis, and Pagie Lewis all of Mercer County. Six grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, one step-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by two brothers Bruce and Glenn Lewis.

Mrs. Azille Goodlett Barnett, 88, widow of Floyd W. Barnett, died Saturday, May 30, 2009 at the Hospice Care Center in Lexington. Born February 13, 1921 in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late W.J. and Verna Robinson Goodlett. She had served as a bus driver for thirteen years having driven for Bluegrass Community Action Mercer County Head Start. |
She was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church where she was very active in the Mission Ministry, had served as a Sunday School Teacher for fifty-three years, and was also a member of W.M.U. for over fifty years. Mrs. Barnett enjoyed fishing, gardening, and her flowers. |
Mrs. Barnett was a 1939 graduate of Fairview High School and a member of Fairview Homemakers Club for more than fifty years.

Survivors include one son Jerry W. (Jean) Barnett of Salvisa, two daughters: Charlene (Tommy) Pinkston of Harrodsburg and Mitzi (Kelly) Bugg of Harrodsburg. Seven grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, two nieces and one nephew also survive. She was preceded in death by one grandson Scott Bugg and two brothers Kenneth Davis Goodlett and Joseph W. Goodlett.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at the Bethel Baptist Church with Bro. Brad King, Earl Pinkston, Bro. Lester Tirey, and Bro. David Culp officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery with Bobby Christerson, Curtis Sherrow, Garland Hoskins, Fred Herald, Kenny Long, and Danny McDonald serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Adult Lady Sunday School Classes.

Born April 14, 1932 in Whitley County, he was the son of the late William Ernest and Artie Perkins Siler. He was a retired cook having worked at Jerry’s in Danville and Arby’s in Tampa, Florida. He was a United States Army Veteran of the Korean War and was a Methodist. |
Survivors include two brothers Delbert “Doc” Siler of Harrodsburg and Clifford Siler of Indiana, and one sister Geneva R. Lower of Cincinnati. Several nieces and nephews also survive |

Born October 4, 1931 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Bob Peavler and Omie Logue. She was a retired nursing assistant at the Friendship House in Danville, had worked at the Boyle Pharmacy, and had attended the Perryville Baptist Church. |
Survivors include two sons: James Kenneth (Neena) Peavler of Danville and Monte Anderson of Danville. Two stepsons Johnny & Tommy Anderson both of Indiana. Thirteen grandchildren, several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive. |
She was preceded in death by one stepdaughter Annette Heffelfinger, four brothers: Connie B., William Lee, James T., and Everett Marshall Peavler and two sisters Ella Sallee and Ovie Gaines. |
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 29, 2009 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Larry Holbrook officiating. Born August 25, 1939 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late William and Josie Marksbury Peavler. He was a retired Machine Operator at Modine, a member of the Shawnee Run Baptist Church, a graduate of Mercer County High School, an antique dealer, and knife trader.

Survivors include his step-mother Nan Peavler of Greenwood, IN., two daughters: Lawana (Ethan) Wilson of Richmond and Melody (Brent McGaughey) Greenup of Waddy, and three grandchildren: Robyn Wilson, Cameron Wilson, and Samantha Greenup.

Mary Lou Durham Lyons, formerly of Cummins Drive, widow of Delmar R. Lyons, died Sunday, May 17, 2009 at the Charleston Health Care Center in Danville after a long illness. Born November 29, 1933 in Yosemite, KY where she was the daughter of the late Roscoe and Ruth Rainey Durham. She was a press operator at the former Cricketeer Manufacturing Corporation, a member of the Baptist faith and attended Southside Christian Church.

Survivors include two sons: Stephen (Pam) Lyons, Harrodsburg and Michael (Dale) Lyons, Waddy; three daughters, Melody “Bitsy” (Kenny) Stephens, Kathy (Dan) Albright and Beth Lyons all of Harrodsburg; one sister Jeanette Thompson, Danville and thirteen grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Chester, Elbert, J.E, Clayton, and Richard Durham and by five sisters, Ellen and Shelby Jean Durham, Laura Swango, Waneda Thompson, and Brenda Galloway.

Burial will be in the Camp Nelson National Cemetery in Nicholasville, Kentucky. Survivors include one daughter Cheryl Wurst of Louisville, one sister Shirley Todd of Richmond, and several nieces and nephews. Several nieces and nephews also survive. |
She was preceded in death by one son Stevie Melton, two brothers Lewis Bishop and Willard Bishop, and three sisters: Lola Sellman, Margaret Fiebelkorn, and Katherine Corbet. |

Born November 12, 1935 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late William Littleton and Mary Hawkins Price. He was retired after thirty-nine years from Square D, was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, a member of the Carpenter’s Christian Church where he served as former Treasurer and Elder, and was a member of the Mercer Masonic Lodge 777 F&AM. |
Besides his wife, survivors include one son Douglas Littleton Price of Lexington, two sisters: Nancy Hanson of Chicago and Rosemary Marksbury of Winchester. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Maxine “Mimi” Pinkston, 82, widow of Ray Pinkston, of Harrodsburg died Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. Born April 2, 1927 in McQueary County, Maxine was the daughter of the late Frank and Mary Watts Ashton. She was a member of the housekeeping staff at Shakertown at Pleasant Hill. Maxine enjoyed bowling and gardening and was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church.

Maxine is survived by three sons: Charles Pinkston of Springfield, KY., Earl (Barbara) Pinkston of Danville, KY and Steve (Kim) Pinkston of Harrodsburg, KY, two sisters: Lura Stephens and Dessie Arns both of Cincinnatti, OH, eleven grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons: Donald and Larry Pinkston, one grandson: Kevin Pinkston, and one great great granddaughter: Makaylie Ashton Sapp and two brothers: Charlie Ashton and Herbert Ashton.

Born in Mercer County, Mary was the daughter of the late Bishop and Ruth Langford Davenport Carter. She was a 1942 graduate of Harrodsburg High School and a 1945 graduate of Good Samaritan where she continued a 44 year career in nursing. |
Mary was a member of the Lafayette Christian Church and enjoyed knitting sweaters, reading, cats, cardinals and all music especially Perry Como. |
Mary leaves behind her best friends James and Patty Mason and Elizabeth of Lexington, in addition, her good friends Wallace and Jane White, also of Lexington. |

Karen Brown Fletcher, 57, Clarksville IN, formerly of Burgin and Harrodsburg died Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at the Wedgewood Health Care Manor in Clarksville IN. Born October 9, 1951 in Harrodsburg she was the daughter of the late Horace and Elizabeth Spaulding Brown. She was the widow of Tommy Fletcher and attended the Baptist Church. Karen was a 1969 graduate of Burgin High School and a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and Mid-America College of Funeral Service. She was a former music teacher of the Lincoln County School System. She was a former funeral director and embalmer for Alexander & Royalty INC. While in Harrodsburg, Karen was the founder of the Widow to Widow group, had been a member of the Anna Elliott Bohon Women’s Club and the Fort Harrods Business and Professional Women’s Club. She had served on the National Funeral Directors Association Pursuit of Excellence Committee and was a former instructor at the Mid-America College of Funeral Service.

Born June 19, 1924 in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Sam L. and Maude Davis Green, Sr.. She was a Baptist, had been a cook at Beaumont Inn for seven years and a librarian at Powell County Public Library for five years. She enjoyed reading and cooking. |
Survivors include three daughters: Debbie (John) Combs of Clay City, Sandy (Chad) Shepherd of Clay City, and D.J. (Greg) Pelster of Lexington. Three sons: Dennis (Christina) Warren of Richmond, Mike (Ruth) Warren of Berea, and Barry Warren of Harrodsburg. One sister Shirley Farris of Riverside, CA., and one brother Jimmy Green of Moberly, MO. Four grandchildren Tara Graham, Nathan Combs, Bridget Shepherd, and Colby Warren, and two great grandchildren Carli Salchli and Ryne Graham, and several nieces and nephews also survive. |
She was preceded in death by two sisters: Mavis Ellington and Janice Bettis, and one brother Sam L. Green, Jr. |

She was a member of the Chaplin Baptist Church, a former salesperson at Shilito’s and had worked at Wrights Aeronautics in Cincinnati. Mrs. Holt was an avid painter and artist. |
Survivors include her son Delbert Holt, Jr. and his wife Dorcas of Harrodsburg. One sister Opal Kentler of Warsaw, Ky., three grandchildren: Sandy (Michael) Jossa of Austin, Tx., Woody (Becky) Holt and Audrey Morris all of Harrodsburg. Five great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. |
She was preceded in death by her daughter Ida Kathryn Weatherford. |

Roger “Dale” Miller, 60, husband of Teresa Ann Miller, died Friday, April 24, 2009 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. Born April 12, 1949 in Washington County, he was the son of the late Sam and Sarah Baker Miller. He was a retired Auto Body Repairman for Stuart Powell in Danville and owned Dale’s Service Center for over thirty years.
Dale was a U.S. Army Veteran of Vietnam, a member of the Crossroads Christian Church, he enjoyed auto racing in the Pure Street Class where he won many trophies. He enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, and spending time with his granddaughters, especially when he would take them for rides in his golf cart.

Besides his wife, Dale is survived by one daughter Melissa “Missy” Clark and her husband Phil of Harrodsburg. Two sons: Travis Dale Miller and his wife Ashley of Parksville, and Dustin “Big D” Miller of Harrodsburg. Four sisters: Iva Jewell Reynolds of Harrodsburg, Nancy (Muriel) Settles of Willisburg, Diane (Leon) Spalding of Springfield, and Jane (Clarence) Byrd of Harrodsburg. One brother Ronnie (Linda) Miller of Harrodsburg, three granddaughters: Kaylee Miller, Cheyenne Clark, and Maddie Jane Miller; several nieces and nephews. His “lapdog babies” Sugar, Chewy, and Kizzy also survive.
He was preceded in death by one sister Virginia Settles and two brothers David and Jerry T. Miller.

Billy was a member of the Benton Baptist Church and enjoyed NASCAR, fishing, camping, and gardening. |

Betty Ellen French Fleischer, 84, widow of Harold Conrad Fleischer, Jr. died Saturday, April 04, 2009 at her residence. Born September 18, 1924 in Chicago she was the daughter of the late Sumner Faville French and Bertha Ellen Anderson French. She was a homemaker and had attended Harrodsburg United Methodist Church. She participated in Community Theater, loved museums, the color purple, tennis, the beach, art galleries, Broadway Theater, travelling and collecting shells. Her love of nature came from growing up in the north woods of Wisconsin.

Survivors include one son: Harold Conrad Fleischer III and his wife, Jane, of San Antonio, Texas and one daughter: Betsy Fleischer of Harrodsburg; one brother: Robert Sumner French of Appleton, Wisconsin; three grandchildren: Harold “Kurt” Conrad Fleischer IV of St. Louis, Missouri; Faville Brady Donahue of Lawrenceburg and Paul Morgan Donahue of Tampa, Florida and two great-grandchildren: Aidan Tyler-Ray Dzuck and Anson David Donahue. She was also preceded in death by her grandson: Corporal Jacob Rudeloff Fleischer, US Army who was killed in action in Afghanistan.

He was a graduate of Boyle County High School, enjoyed playing golf, fishing, all animals, and the St. Louis Rams. |

Hudson Department and was a member of the Our Savior Lutheran Church in Michigan. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, sewing, reading, volunteering at the Harrodsburg Health Care Manor and collecting dolls.

Survivors include one son, James Edward Fogt, Jr. and his wife, Vicki of Harrodsburg; one brother, James Milburn of Burgin; one grand-daughter, Melissa Fogt of Harrodsburg and several nieces and nephews. Virginia Rae Logue Schell, 81, widow of Delmas Schell, Lawrenceburg died Saturday, March 21, 2009 in Lawrenceburg. Born August 8, 1927 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Reid and Vivion Dean Logue. She was a member of the Lawrenceburg Community Baptist Church. In 2003 she was Anderson County’s Citizen of the Year and in 2007 she was Anderson County’s Citizen of the Month and she was very active in God’s Basin for many years. She was a retired Texas Instrument employee and a retired apartment manager at Executive East Apartments in Lexington.

Survivors include one daughter, Judy (Norman) Ledford of Paris, three sons: Donnie (Jane) Sims of Lawrenceburg, Larry (Darlene) Sims of Harrodsburg and Gary (Becky) Sims of Salvisa; three sisters: Margaret Sims, Rebecca Kinder and Wanda Kinder all of Harrodsburg; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her grand-daughter, Dana Leigh Sims.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with burial in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Donnie Sims, Larry Sims, Gary Sims, Clay Yocum, Brent McGinnis, Cory Sims, Norman Ledford, Steve Hill and Chris Harrod. Betty Jean Carpenter Hardin, 69, of Jeffersonville, widow of George Henry Carpenter, died Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at the UK Medical Center in Lexington. Born September 26, 1939 in Mercer County she was the daughter of the late John D. and Virginia Browning Riley. She had attended The Assembly of God church in Jeffersonville. She was a Senior Companion and had attended Mid-Way College.

Survivors include: one son, Robert (Connie) Carpenter of Jeffersonville; one daughter, Brenda (Francis) Edwards of Salvisa; five brothers: Charles (Geneva) Riley of Salvisa, Raymond (Judy) Riley, Joe (Judy) Riley, Donnie (Shirley) Riley all of Lexington and Mike (Karen) Riley of Winchester; two sisters, Sue (Dan) Burkhart of Richmond and Aileen (Jim) Hisle of Winchester; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was a retired supervisor of both Cricketeer and Palm Beach and during his retirement he served as a Bluegrass Transit Driver. Earl was a Army Veteran, member of the American Legion and Magnolia Street Christian Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and sports. |
Survivors include: two step- sons: Elvin Anderson of Perryville and Jimmy Anderson of Stanford; three step-daughters: Edith Lee of Danville, Linda Myers of Illinois and Bea Beasley of Harrodsburg; six step-grandchildren, nine step-great grandchildren and four step-great-great grandchildren. Brenda loved her dogs, basketball games, stock car races, doll collecting and movies. |
Other than her husband and mother Brenda is survived by one daughter; Eva Francis (Jeff) Sanford of Junction City; two brothers; Robert C. (Melva) White of Harrodsburg and Tony Lee (Vickie) White of Lawrenceburg, three grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, uncles and aunts. |
She was preceded in death by a brother; Kenneth Cash White. |

Born October 14, 1939 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late James E. and Janie Drury Pinkston. He was retired from H&B Sanitation. Ralph enjoyed collecting die cast cars and knives and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors besides his wife include his step daughter Yuvonne Benge Wesley of Harrodsburg; four stepsons Ronnie McElroy and Donnie McElroy of Danville, Andrew McElroy of Lincoln County, and Cecil McElroy of Hustonville. Two brothers Johnnie (Debbie) Pinkston of Burgin and J.L. (Sara) Pinkston of Danville. One sister Shirley Crews of Harrodsburg, fifteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one step-son James McElroy and one great grandchild.

He was a retired carpenter, security officer, police officer and a fireman for the City of Burgin for many years. He was a Veteran of the Ky Army National Guard. He was a member of the Burgin Christian Church where he served as a deacon, Past Patron of the Eastern Star #309 and Past Master of the Mercer Masonic Lodge #777. He enjoyed collecting knives, clocks and cigarette lighters. |

Mrs. Joyce Ann Medley Sallee, 75, wife of Howard T. Sallee died Sunday, February 15, 2009 at her residence. Born November 14, 1933 in Anderson County she was the daughter of the late Worley and Nettie Casey Medley. Joyce was a caregiver for several years. She was a member of the Indian Hills Christian Church and spent her free time flower gardening, watching and feeding birds and collecting and restoring antiques.

In addition to her husband Joyce is survived by a son: Howard Butch Sallee, Jr. of Mercer County and a daughter: Susan (Lee) Readnower of Mercer County, two brothers: Bobby Medley and Carol Medley both of Anderson County and one sister: Barbara Hatchell of Anderson County. Five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Joyce is preceded in death by one brother Herbert Maurice Medley.

Born April 6, 1926 in Washington County he was the son of the late Irvin and Addie Bruner Hendren. He was a retired Corning Incorporated employee where he was a production supervisor. He was a World War II Veteran of the United States Army, attended Ebenezer Church of Christ and loved fishing and spending time in Florida, gardening, golf and taking his dog Spanky for rides on the golf cart.

Survivors include two sons: Irvin Eugene (Sue) Hendren of Etowah, North Carolina and Wendell Brack (Ann) Hendren of Harrisburg, North Carolina; one daughter: Teresa Ann (Jim) Davis of Harrodsburg; one brother: Reid Hendren of Harrodsburg; his companion, Brenda Collier of Harrodsburg, Spanky his dachshund; seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.

He was a retired veteran of the National Guard, a member of the Pioneer Baptist Church, and enjoyed music and collecting guns.

Fred A. Purvis, 86, husband of the late Dolly Purvis died Thursday, January 8, 2009 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. Born June 21, 1922 in Salvisa, he was the son of the late James and Saphronia Purvis. He was the former owner of Purvis Grocery which he operated for twenty-three years. He had worked at ATR in Danville and the Harrodsburg Gateway. He was a member of the Harrodsburg Christian Church where he served as Deacon and Elder. Fred enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his son, Fred Purvis, Jr. of Campbellsville and one granddaughter Bethany Sprowles of Campbellsville. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

She was a retired Corning Glass employee and a lifelong member of Harrodsburg Baptist Church. |
Survivors include: one son: Bronson Yeast and his wife, Nancy of Mercer County; one daughter: Sherry Rayma of Frankfort; two grandchildren: Bronna Yeast Scoggins and her husband Chuck and Shane Willhoite and two great-grandchildren: Chris and Laura Scoggins. She was preceded in death by two brothers: Marcus Arnold Lawson and William Lawson and two sisters: Velva Sanders and Elizabeth Lawson Rogers. |

Freedom Baptist Church. |
Survivors include one sister Beatrice L. Hourigan of Harrodsburg; two nephews Donald Litteral of Cornishville and Robbie Litteral of Danville, one niece Hilda Mae Pike of Lexington. Several great nieces and nephews also survive. |

She was a Charter Member of the Magnolia Street Christian Church, the founding Trustee of Royalty Cemetery in Bohon, and enjoyed gardening. |
Survivors include two sons: James (Kerry) Royalty of Versailles and Jerry Lee (Ann K.) Royalty of Louisville. One daughter Mary Agnes (Lonnie) Hatchel of Harrodsburg, two grandchildren Michael Dean Hatchel and Amy Lee Royalty Sparks; three great grandchildren: Bryce Hatchel, and Madison and Morgan Sparks, and two special friends Garnet Leonard and Leona Royalty-Berg both of Harrodsburg. |

Survivors include one daughter Brenda Hensley of Norfolk, VA., three sons: Billy Turner of Harrodsburg, Tony Turner of Brunswick, OH., and Ricky Turner of Harrodsburg. Three sisters: Ruth Brown of Burgin, Helen Miller of Richmond, and Mary Hanna DiLuzio of Pennsylvania. Two brothers: Robert Turner of Burgin and Marion Turner of Harrodsburg. Thirteen grandchildren, five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. |

Virginia Helm, 102, of Danville, died January 2, 2009 at the Harrodsburg Health Care Center. Born July 23, 1906 in Parksville, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Hardin and Mary Moore Helm. |
She retired after Forty-Two Years from Kentucky School for the Deaf, having served as an Executive Secretary to four superintendants from the late 1920s to the early 1970s. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Danville, she enjoyed playing bridge, reading books and periodicals, and taking walks. |
Survivors include her brother Stanley Helm of Danville, four nephews: Wayne Westerfield of Harrodsburg, John Cocanougher of Oxford, Ohio, H.P. Durham of Prescott, AZ., and Donald Helm of Fish Creek, WI. Two nieces Lillian Scoyen of Palo Alto, CA., and Mary Jo Helm of Fish Creek, WI. Several great nieces and nephews also survive. |

He was a former custodian at Centenary United Methodist Church in Lexington and was a member of the United Pentecostal Church of Lawrenceburg. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. |
Besides his wife, David is survived by three daughters: Teresa (John) Brandon of Harrodsburg, Dana (Steve) Bowman of Lawrenceburg, and Angela (Scottie) Gibson of Harrodsburg. Three brothers: Larry (Donna) Stinnett of Harrodsburg, Bobby Stinnett of Tennessee, and James (Nettie) Stinnett of Harrodsburg. Two sisters: Frances (Earl) Major of Lancaster and Becky (Andy) Smith of Harrodsburg. Born August 26, 1932 in Fayette County he was the son of the late Tevis and Marie Bradburn Motley. He was a member of Shakertown Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon. He was a retired Kentucky Utilities employee and farmer. He enjoyed antique tractors and spending time with his grandchildren.

She was a retired cook from Burgin School after Thirty Years. She was a member of the Burgin Methodist Church, an avid U.K. Fan, and enjoyed dancing and gardening. She was the widow of Elmer Derringer and Sam Taylor.

Survivors include one son Donald Derringer of Danville, four daughters: Betty (Charles) Gregory of Harrodsburg, Maxine (Edward) Rigney of Memphis, TN., Darlene (Ernie) Carmichael of Beattyville, and Imozene (Tom) Major of Maysville. Twenty-one grandchildren, thirty-eight great grandchildren, seven great great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Daniel G. Cornelius, 96, a lifelong resident of Mercer County, born Sept. 14, 1912 and passed away peacefully December 7, 2008. He was the son of the late Richard and Verner Scrogham Cornelius. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 73 years Myrtle Parsons Cornelius, one daughter, Danna (Ronal) Sharp and one grandson, Daniel Marshall Sanders, two sisters, June Grivetti and Lyda Todd, two brothers, Richard and Jack Cornelius, two half-sisters, Evelyn Ellis and Julia Spears, four half-brothers, Jim, Robert, Fred and Howard Cornelius.

He is survived by two daughters, Joyce (Cleo) Sanders, Harrodsburg and Janice (Dick) Johnson, Louisville, one granddaughter, Amy E. Davis, Liberty and two grandsons, James H. (Leslie) Withrow and Daniel C. (Mindy) Withrow, both of Louisville, four great grandchildren, Hallie Grace, Ella Brooke, Christian H and Nicholas A. Withrow, first cousins Garland and Lonnie Scrogham, Elsie Wells and Alpha Kemp and several nieces and nephews.
He was in the first graduating class from Harrodsburg High School.

He was a business man and was owner of Dan Cornelius' Used Cars for many years. After retirement, he was Supt. of Old Fort Harrod State Park. He was a Mercer County Magistrate in the 5th District for several years and enjoyed working in the Legislature in Frankfort. He was a member of the Mercer County Democrats and served on various boards in the Community and enjoyed working with people, especially ther Mercer County Senior Citizens. He was a volunteer fireman for the Harrodsburg Fire Department. He was a lifetime member of the Harrodsburg Christian Church, a Kentucky Colonel, past Master Mason of the Mercer Lodge #777 F and AM, and was a past patron of the Order of the Eastern Star #307. He was a past member of the Scottish Rite, Shriners and the Harrodsburg Lions Club.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, a retired Signet & Clark Security employee and a lifetime farmer. He was a member of Cornishville Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon, Church Clerk, Training Union Director and Sunday School Superintendent.

Johnny Monroe, 46, died Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. Born April 9, 1962 in Indianapolis he was the son of the late James C. Monroe and the late Catherin Lowry Carroll. He had served in the Kentucky National Guard, was a former detail person for Man-O-War Ford in Lexington and enjoyed reading and NASCAR.

Survivors include one step-son: Michael Lynn Devine of Harrodsburg; three step-daughters: Shelly Kay Devine and Elizabeth Jean Devine, both of Harrodsburg and Kelly Joe (Dusty) Shackelford of Stanford; two brothers: Barry Estes of Indianapolis and James Monroe of Lexington; one sister: Judy McGlothlin of Harrodsburg; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Neoma Sanford Hatchett, 101, formerly of Harrodsburg, died Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at her daughter’s home in Kennesaw, Georgia. Born September 16, 1907 in Bohon, KY., she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Melinda Sanford. She was a former school teacher and homemaker. She was the widow of Woodson Albert Hatchett. |
Survivors include her son James Powell (Linda) Hatchett of Wellington, Florida, and her daughter Anne Hatchett Tyler of Kennesaw, Georgia. Four grandchildren, four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. |
She was preceded in death by one son William Hume Hatchett. |
Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 29, 2008 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Julius Hovan officiating. Born July 8, 1937 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Willie Baker and Anna Byrd Carr. Freda operated a family care home for 25 years. She enjoyed music, gardening and animals. She was a member of the Grace Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son: Earl Briscoe of Harrodsburg, three daughters: Garnetta Wallace of Russellville KY, Alfreda Whitehouse and Kathy Briscoe both of Harrodsburg. One brother: Fonnie Baker and one sister: Barbara Green of Lawrenceburg. Twelve grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Freda is preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters. |
